**An expression is in its simplest form when it is easiest to work with.** There are a few basic rules we follow to make an expression simple and easy to work with:

2. Expand or multiply out any factored polynomials.

3. Simplify any fractions and multiply them out to whole numbers when possible.

For example, let’s convert the expression *(x+3)(x+1) + ^{8}⁄_{2}* to its simplest form.

1. First, let’s expand the factored polynomial (x+3)(x+1). Doing so, we end up with x

2. The other term in the expression is a fraction, which we simplify to the whole number 4.
